New to the site: the 89th annual Holy Smoke Deep Pit BBQ returns to Our Lady of Light Catholic Parish in Descanso on Sunday, September 6, 2026, starting at 11am.
Started in 1937, this East County tradition is a real deep-pit BBQ: locally grown beef is seasoned, wrapped, and buried in an oak-fired pit for 13 hours of slow cooking before being served with slaw, beans, rolls, and homemade peach cobbler. The day also brings a beer garden, live music and dancing with the Big City Hillbillies, a vintage/collectibles sale (“Grandpa’s Attic”), kids’ games, vendor booths, and raffle drawings including a $500 grand prize. Admission and parking are free; food, drinks, and raffle tickets are sold separately.
